There are 23 families of mayflies found worldwide, consisting of about 2500 species. In Australia only 9 of these families are represented with 84 species present. The families of mayflies are divided into 2 suborders, the Schistonota and the Pannota. Of the 84 species present in Australia 54 are found in the Leptophlebiidae family.
