This family
consists of small to medium sized flies which superficially resemble
fruit flies (Tephritidae). Many species
have tinted and mottled wings. The larvae of this family occur in
both living and dead organic matter while the adults can often be
seen resting on vegetation in moist habitats or feeding on dung.
Achias species
are a distinctive group as the females have a hammerhead and the
males have an antler-like head with their eyes at the end of long
stalks. The males use their head to fight other males.
