Members of this family are mostly small to medium in size and commonly known as fruit flies. Many have attractively coloured and patterned bodies with variously patterned wings. Fruit flies are some of the most economically important species due to the destructive and often secretive feeding nature of their larvae. The larvae of fruit flies feed on a variety of plant tissue including fruits, seeds, galls, leaves, stems or flowers depending on the species. Adult fruit flies feed predominantly on liquids such as sap, nectar, honeydew or droppings.
