The
beetles in this family are usually oblong to oval in shape with
a slightly flattened body. Nitidulid beetles have a wide variety
of habits and habitats and can be found in leaf litter, rotten fruits,
the flowers of many plants, seeds, rotten cacti, the cones of cycads
and in trees wounds and bark. They often prey on scale insects and
are pests of both stored dried fruits and ripe fruit in orchards.
Nitidulid larvae feed mostly on decaying matter or fungi, although
some species are predatory.
